Applewood

Applewood was built in 1916 as a self-sustaining farm for the Charles Stewart Mott family and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.  The home and grounds encompass approximately 34 acres that include an orchard with 29 varieties of heritage apples and 18 acres that are extensively landscaped. The original gatehouse, barn and chicken coop complete the estate.

A new partnership in 2009, KGCB works with AT&T to increase participation in phone book recycling. Call 1-800-953-4400 and provide your zip code to receive automated information about where to recycle your old phone books.

The market participates in three Cultivating Our Community projects on their property and serves as a development site for a vegetable garden. KGCB along with a market vendor, planted a “living sculpture” garden at the market in 2009 with a grant from Scotts Miracle Gro.

Genesee Conservation District

The Conservation District educates citizens about conservation through wildlife habitat improvement and forestry. As part of KGCB’s tree palette, a list of compatible trees was developed for inclusion in the Conservation District’s twice yearly sale, which offers native trees, shrubs and perennials.

GCMPC partners with KGCB to provide recycling outreach, and assists in organizing the biannual HHW collections. In addition to solid waste management, their major program areas are transportation and community development. The Genesee County Landbank has taken the lead in stabilizing neighborhoods and revitalizing the City of Flint and surrounding communities. Through partnerships with public, private and non-profit entities, the Landbank encourages re-use of more than 7,000 residential, commercial, and industrial properties it has acquired through the new tax foreclosure process since its inception in 2002. In addition to participating in the Cultivating Our Community program, MDOT is incorporating the KGCB plant and tree palette in all future Genesee County enhancement projects.
